Subject: test 3 scores posted in Blackboard
Dear students,
I have posted the scores for the test you took last Wednesday in the online gradebook at the Blackboard site for our course. The scores include a curve of 9 points. As with previous tests, I have some slides that I will use to briefly review the test in class. (For some reason, Blackboard is freezing when I try to upload documents right now; I will keep trying to upload the slides.) Also in class on Monday, your answer sheets from the test will be returned to you, along with other unreturned graded work.
Best,
Professor Eggleston

Subject: Introduction to Ethics - introductory information
Dear students,
Hello. I’ll be your professor for PHIL 160, Introduction to Ethics, and I am writing to you today in order to give you some information that you might find useful as you gear up for the semester.
First, as you probably know, you have to be enrolled in one of our course’s sixteen discussion sections as well as being enrolled in the lecture portion of the course. Your first class will be the lecture next Monday at 12 noon, in 3139 Wescoe, and then your second class will be the lecture the following Wednesday at the same time in the same room. Then you will probably have your first discussion section (in some other room, specific to your discussion section) sometime between Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Friday at 5 p.m.
There are some discussion sections on Monday mornings. They will not meet on August 25 (since they would precede the first lecture of the course), or on September 1 (because of Labor Day). So, Monday discussion sections will meet for the first time on September 8.
Second, you will need to buy the textbook I have chosen for this course. It’s The Fundamentals of Ethics, 2nd edition, by Russ Shafer-Landau (Oxford University Press, 2012), ISBN 978-0-19-977355-8. I have asked the KU bookstore to stock this book, or you can buy it elsewhere, including online. I believe there is now a 3rd edition of this book. I have not seen that edition, and I will refer to the 2nd edition in the syllabus and when discussing specific passages from the book in lecture.
There will also be some other required readings, provided on Blackboard. Because of their length, you should be prepared to print them out rather than reading them on a computer screen.
Third, I have set up a web site for the course, at http://www.benegg.net/courses/ethics14. I’ve posted the syllabus there (though I will also hand out hard copies on the first day of class) and I may post other things on the course web site as the course progresses. There won’t be anything there that you’ll be responsible for prior to our first class, so you don’t have to worry about it right away. I just wanted to go on and give you the URL.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing you next Monday at 12 noon, in 3139 Wescoe.
Best wishes,
Professor Eggleston
