Subject: The Ethics of Scientific Research - room change
Hi everybody,
Because the room to which our class was assigned is a little small for a group of our size, I have had our class moved. Our new room is 2094 Dole Human Development Center (just east of Haworth).
Best,
Ben Eggleston

Subject: The Ethics of Scientific Research - introductory information
Dear students,
Hello. I’ll be your professor for BIOL 420 / PHIL 500, The Ethics of Scientific Research, and I am writing to you today in order to give you some information that you might find useful as you gear up for the semester.
First, this course is listed as both a section of BIOL 420 and PHIL 500. The requirements are the same regardless of the number under which you are enrolled.
Second, there is one required textbook for this course. The book is ORI Introduction to the Responsible Conduct of Research, updated edition, by Nicholas H. Steneck. I have asked the KU Bookstore to stock this book. Alternatively, you can buy it at http://bookstore.gpo.gov/products/sku/017-023-00214-7, or download it from http://ori.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/rcrintro.pdf, or download it from the course Blackboard site. If you look for this book at the KU Bookstore, you may need to look for it under PHIL 500 and not BIOL 420.
Third, I have set up a web site for the course, at www.benegg.net/courses/esr5. I’ve posted the syllabus there (though I will also hand out hard copies on the first day of class) and I may post other things on the course web site as the course progresses. There won’t be anything there that you’ll be responsible for prior to our first class, so you don’t have to worry about it right away. I just wanted to go on and give you the URL.
Fourth, I will also be using a Blackboard site, to provide you with electronic copies of many non-textbook readings. I plan on handing out hard copies of as many of those readings as possible, so do not feel obliged to print (or read online) everything you see there when the course Blackboard site appears in your list of available Blackboard sites.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing you at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 27, in 3097 Wescoe Hall.
Best wishes,
Ben Eggleston
